Re-certification FAQs

Question: I attended a seminar that spanned one full day and each educational section was broken down into 1 contact hour per session. Given that SCAADAC has a policy that states that courses for re-certification need to be at least 2 clock or contact hours in length, will this seminar count toward my re-certification?

Answer: If the seminar you attended dealt with the core functions of addictions counseling or obsessive compulsive behavior or was under licensure agencies such as MFT, MSW, and LPC and was equal to or greater than 2 hours during that day, the answer is yes.

Question: I inadvertently let my certification lapse. What do I have to do regain my certification?

Answer: If your certification has lapsed, you will have to submit a new application (not re-certification application), the application fee, a current job description, a signed affirmation (which is a part of the application), and evaluations from a Supervisor and co-worker (one of whom must be a certified addictions counselor). After these materials are received, the SCAADAC Certification Commission will inform you that you are eligible to sit for an oral interview at which time you must submit the required fee for said interview.

Question: Can I take any distance learning courses toward my 60 contact hours for re-certification?

Answer: Yes, the Certification Commission allows each re-certifying counselor to obtain up to 30 contact  hours of education through distance learning. The key to the type of distance learning taken revolves around there being a test to verify completion. The agency supplying the course must also supply a certificate upon successful completion.
